Century City at a glance

Century City is the very definition of "live, work, and play" and this has made it an attractive destination for businesses looking for a modern suburb that meets all their needs. On the one end it is made up of luxury hotels and plush homes, and on the other end, it boasts technologically smart and eco-friendly offices that have become game-changers in the commercial sector.

Let's take a closer look at this flourishing suburb located in Cape Town's northern suburbs in an area known as Milnerton.

History

Believe it or not, the opulent Century City emerged from 250ha of wasteland and the first remnants of development only started piecing together in 1997. It was during this time that the suburb was rezoned from exclusively a residential spot to one that allowed for commercial, retail and leisure opportunities. Of course, this rezoning brought about massive infrastructural developments that set the foundation for Century City today. Some of the very first businesses to move into the suburb were big names such as Pricewater House Coopers, Vodacom, the Louis Group, and Unisys.

Commercial hotspots

Although Century City is a young suburb, its growth and development has been phenomenal so far. The commercial sector is comprised of approximately 10 million square feet of Grade A office space. And most of this space is occupied by top industry leaders in various sectors such as legal services, marketing and IT, engineering, and financial services.

There are plenty of office buildings dotted around the suburb, most are Grade A but there are a number of Grade P stock coming to the fore. What's more, businesses have the convenience of being closely located around a myriad of coffee shops, restaurants, retailers and public transport.

Some of the sought-after commercial buildings include;

  • The Quays
  • Grosvenor Square
  • The Gatehouse
  • The Matrix
  • The Courtyard
  • Waterford Estate
  • The Pavilion
  • Bridge Park
  • Boulevard Place
  • Sable Square
  • Sable Corner
  • The Apex
  • Nordic Light Park 2 and;
  • No. 1 Waterhouse

Infrastructure

The roads in Century City are well-maintained, regularly upgraded, and easily link to Cape Town's city centre, the wider province, and further afield to the rest of the country. The main freeway running through the suburb is the N1. There are also a number of other freeways close by such as the N2, N7, M3, and M4. For the workers in Century City, most use key municipal roads to travel to work, these include Bridge Street, Century Way, Century Boulevard, Boundary Road, Sable Road, Bosmansdam Road, and Ratanga Road.

The growth of Century City's commercial sector is owed to its close proximity to the Port of Cape Town and the Cape Town International Airport. It lies only 16 minutes away from the harbour, and 21 minutes from the airport.

Transport

Travelling to and from various places of work is made convenient owing to a number of public transport services around the suburb. Many employees use the Golden Arrow Bus Service which operates directly from Century City and runs through the CBD, Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Killarney, Elsies River, Hanover Park and Atlantis. Another popular transport option is the MyCiti bus, which has a terminal in Century City's Montague Gardens. Other options include travelling by taxis or train.

The businesses of Century City have access to state-of-the-art amenities. Top shopping malls in include Canal Walk Shopping Centre and Market Lane. Popular restaurants such as The Slug and Lettuce, Tigers Milk, Tower Restaurant, and La Rocca make for ideal casual meetings or staff lunches. In emergency situations, there are expert healthcare options such as Intercare, Mediclinic, Medicross, and a network of healthcare practitioners.
